The First Peloponnesian War has been understood only as a historical event proceeding the Peloponnesian War. Unlike common understandings, the war had lasted for fifteen years with clashes between the two major powers of the Delian and Peloponnesian Leagues. The two leagues already experienced extreme hostilities and armed conflicts even before the Peloponnesian War. The fear amongst Sparta and other Peloponnesian city states of the rise of Athens led the whole Greek world to the war. Athens consolidated the Delian League after the failure of Egyptian expedition, and conducted limited military operations against Persia under the truce with Sparta. Meanwhile, Athens transformed the Delian League into an Athenian empire. The 'Thirty Years¡¯ Peace' treaty became a ritual to confirm Athens's status as hegemon in the Greek world. |
