Implications of the Israeli Military’s Multicultural acceptability for the Korean Military’s Multicultural Barracks Polic

Despite the rapid increase in the number of multicultural soldiers in the Korean military, it has exhibited the low level of awareness and acceptance about them. Multicultural soldiers are placed in a service environment which pays little respect and consideration to other cultures due to the general soldier-centered thinking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze Korean soldiers’ multicultural awareness as well as laws and system related to multiculturalism. In so doing, it also aims to present recommended directions of multicultural policy development of the Korean military through the Israeli military’s multiculturalism policy.
To this end, this study examines various research materials which includes literature review, case studies, theses, journal articles and books on multiculturalism, and major Korean news media. Particular importance has been given to critical reading of military documents, such as the Defense Reform 2.0, 2020 Defense White Paper, and the Unit Management Directive. 
The findings from this study applicable to the development of multiculturalism policy in the Korean military can be summarized as follows: First, coping with low multicultural awareness, it is necessary to raise multicultural awareness and acceptability of others by incorporating multicultural education in the curriculum of the military academy and advanced training schools. It is also important to create a social consensus to develop multicultural teacher education. Second, in terms of law and system, it is necessary to take systematic measures such as establishing a department (tentative name: Defense Multicultural Center) to deal with this matter, revising the Military Service Act for North Korean defectors, recruiting officers or non-commissioned officers from multicultural backgrounds, and improving welfare benefits for multicultural soldiers. Third, as for strengthening acceptance-based approaches, it is necessary to utilize multicultural soldiers’ potential capabilities, and so is it important to ensure the efficient management of their personal data and support measures for multicultural public servants and their families.
This study has important implications with regard to the development of multicultural policies as the number of multicultural soldiers in the Korean military increases.
