본 연구의 목적은 미군 병영 내에서 널리 불리는 군가의 양식인 marching cadence의 사례분석을 통해, 소멸 위기에 처한 대한민국 군가 중흥을 위한 대안 과 시사점을 모색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 그 탄생 과정과 문화적 배경, 대중화의 과정과 이유, 기능과 특징, 그리고 대한민국 군가에 주는 함의를 분석하였다. 최 초의 marching cadence는 덕워스 일병이라는 한 흑인 병사가 훈련병 인솔 중 부대 사기 증진과 발맞춤을 위해 부른 재치 있고 즉흥적인 노래에서 출발하며, 그 배경에는 서아프리카에서부터 노예로 끌려온 흑인들이 오랫동안 정서 표출의 수단으로 활용했던 Call & Response 전통이 자리잡고 있었다. 주도적인 선창자 1명만 있으면 나머지 구성원은 그 선창에 복창하는 것만으로 노래에의 참여가 가능한 가사숙지의 용이성, 단순하고 반복적인 멜로디, 그리고 높은 이상과 신념 대신 장병의 개인적 일상을 해학적으로 표현한 가사는 깊은 공감을 얻었다. 무엇 보다 이 현상을 장려하고 전군 보급에 앞장선 지휘관 렌츠 대령을 비롯한 상급 지휘관들은 정착과 대중화의 공헌자이다. 여전히 외워 부르는 군가, 상급 지휘관 의 의도와 국가적 이상과 목표가 담긴 가사만을 고집하는 대한민국 군가에 marching cadence는 귀중한 시사점을 제공한다
초 록 [영문]
The purpose of this study is to explore alternatives and implications for the revival of the Korean military song, which is in danger of extinction, through a case analysis of marching cadence, a form of military song widely sung in U.S. military barracks. To do so, we analyzed its birth process and cultural background, the process and reasons for its popularization, its functions and features, and its implications for Korean military music. The first marching cadence originated as a witty, improvised song sung by a black soldier named Private Duckworth to boost troop morale and keep the troops in step while leading drills, and was based on the call-and-response tradition that had long been used by enslaved blacks from West Africa as a means of emotional expression. The ease of learning the lyrics, the simple and repetitive melody, and the lyrics' humorous take on the personal lives of soldiers instead of high ideals and beliefs resonated deeply with the troops. Above all, senior commanders, including Colonel Lenz, who encouraged the phenomenon and spearheaded its dissemination to the entire army, are credited with its establishment and popularization. For a country that still insists on memorized military songs, lyrics that reflect the intentions of senior commanders and national ideals and goals, MARCHING CADENCE offers valuable lessons.
