Since the first aircraft carrier was built in 1918, the competition over aircraft carriers between great powers including the U.S. has become fierce today. This is probably because an aircraft carrier is a very useful means in both the military and non-military fields. At the same time, despite its high construction cost, operating cost, and the development of A2/AD capabilities in conflict area, the effectiveness of the carrier has been a subject of heated debate. 
With this in mind, the goal of this study is to verify the effectiveness of the U.S. naval carrier operations in the previous war. From a strictly military perspective, this study will evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of the U.S. naval carrier operations in the Gulf War, America’s first war since the Post-Cold War, and then analyzes how those limitations of the carriers were overcome through literature review. In order to ensure credibility and objectivity, the study has examined and analyzed the primary source material held by the US Congress’ General Accounting Office, the Department of Defense, and the Naval History and Heritage Command.
The evaluation of carrier operations is based on its missions specified in the Maritime Strategy. That is, this study focuses on the two primary missions : sea control and power projection. In terms of sea control, whilst the carrier contributed to maritime transportation security and destroyed the Iraqi Navy, its the mobility was limited due to the Iraq’s anti-sea mines and missiles threats. As for power projection, whiles the carrier contributed to achieving air superiority and striking ground targets, its lesser capabilities in joint operations were viewed as problems concerning effective joint air operations. After the war, the U.S. Navy carried out major innovations to improve the problems found in the Gulf War and tried to overcome the limitations of the carrier. The lessons learned from the U.S. Navy’s carrier operations in the Gulf War have great implications for the Korean military in consideration of the recent domestic debates over an aircraft carrier.
